The full title of these two volumes is "An History of the original parish of Whalley and Honor of Clitheroe to which is subjoined and account of the Parish of Cartmell". The book is written in the same excellent style as his "History of Craven". These two volumes comprise over 1,100 pages between them and covers the area to the west of that covered by "The History of Craven" - i.e. the Yorkshire borders and on well into Lancashire. The two volumes are now very rare and will likely cost over 700 pounds to buy, though single copies of each volume are around at about 250 pounds.

The first volume deals with the general history starting with the early Britons up to and including the Saxon times. It then deals with the ecclesiastical history (church & vicarage), and continues with Clitheroe castle, the honour of Clitheroe, and forests etc.

The second volume commences with a topographical survey of the area, then deals with the chapelry of Burnley, the parishes of Blackburn, Rochdale and Cartmell. There are many names and lots of pedigrees of the more eminent families, some of which are of the "pull out" type. Many of the full page plates are from drawings by William Turner.

It should be noted by those with an interest in Yorkshire that this book covers the parishes of Mitton and Slaidburn, and also of Rochdale which (anciently) includes the chapelry of Saddleworth and surrounding district along with numerous references to people of the surrounding areas further to the east (such as Bolton by Bowland etc.).. This area was in the West Riding, until the name changes in 1974.
