A short History of Todmorden :

"A short History of Todmorden" published in 1912, contains nearly 300 pages with over 20 photographs etc. It covers the geology of the area, neolithic man, the Roman occupation, Danes, place names and dialect, mediaeval churches etc, the Reformation period, Trade and industry, the railways and the Todmorden of 1912. Lots of names with an insight into life of the times.

Todmorden and the Great War :

"Todmorden and the Great war" published in 1922 deals with both the fighting men and those left at home to carry on. Lots of names of both groups of people, with a transcription of all of those on the large war memorial. Over 250 pages with over 30 photographs. It should be noted that the printing of this book is not the best in the world, however the whole of the book is quite readable and searchable.

I have read this book from cover to cover, and frequently refer back to it for reference. For anyone with a family member who lived in Todmorden and Walsden during the First World War, or who has a general interest in the Lancashire Fusiliers, this book is a must. It is written in simple English, and contains many, many names and photographs of local people from soldiers to civilians to nurses and doctors.

It covers the stories of those who fought with the Lancashire Fusiliers as told by the men themselves, from diaries, letters sent home, and local records. Not only that, but it chronicles the work carried out by those at home - men and women, details of those who received awards and medals, the medal ceremonies, the fallen and the casualties, Centre Vale Military Hospital, the hard times suffered by the local people, trade and employment, a fascinating local diary from 1914 to 1921, and so much more.
