PENISTONE, THURLSTONE, HOYLANDSWAINE AND SURROUNDING AREA
WAR MEMORIALS

“WE WILL REMEMBER THEM . ”

The above two books were researched, written and produced by a local Penistone couple to commemorate all the men from Penistone, Thurlstone and the surrounding areas who lost their lives in “The Great War”. “The Stories Behind the Names” gives details of the family, personal and military history of each of the 58 names on Penistone memorial and seven other men not on the memorial, but from the local area. In the book “The Fallen, Their Stories” they researched the stories of 19 men from the Thurlstone area and 4 from Hoylandswaine. Both books include letters from overseas, awards, photos and other interesting facts.

The books are available for sale in Penistone Library and other outlets in Penistone. The profits from the Penistone book are going to SSAFA and BLESMA (2 forces charities), with some also going to Penistone History Archive. Profits from the Thurlstone book will be given to St Saviours Church in Thurlstone.

During the research they discovered a memorial table in Thurlstone Church dedicated to Major Richard Day, MC & Bar. Richard was not from Thurlstone but had family in the town. They have produced a small booklet about this man as well, which has been given to Thurlstone Church.
